Lucy Cavendish writes for Goddess Goodies: My Five Elements.

Each of the five elements are sacred: earth, air, fire, water and spirit. Each element has a unique energy and resonance, and all are in balance. We work with their energies, and the various blendings of their energised in spells, rituals, and when we cast circle, within which is our sacred “world between worlds”. In circle, we ask the elements to join us for our sacred work. Spirit, the fifth element which holds all else in balance, has not the definitions of the other elements. it is unique and personal to each person working with magic.

The five elements which I work with is by no means universal, or absolute: it is the model with which I most resonate. Some work with four elements: earth, air, fire and water, and some, for example, Celtic reconstructionists work the three elements: those that are called land, sea and sky.

Elements are associated with the directions of the compass, however, it is a matter of personal preference whether you work within the traditional model, whether you adapt these associations to reflect the natural features of the region you are working within, or whether you work utterly intuitively... The most important aspect of working with the elements is learning their unique qualities - honouring them as the sacred expressions of the Goddess that they are.

Regarding directions: The elements listed below are in the trad model (northern hemisphere), but they can be moved depending on where you live. So, for example, Western Australians would possibly put water in the west, its traditional home - because there's that big ocean off in that direction. For me on the east coast, I'd be likely to put it in the east, where my big ocean is...

EARTH (Base Chakra)  Located at the base of the spine, the Base Chakra forms our foundation. It is related to our survival instincts, our sense of grounding and connection to our bodies and the earth. Ideally this chakra brings us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence.

Earth: Internal, shifting, yet stable, the feminine element of earth is the practical element that is expressed in the material... Sexuality, strength, the urge to action, purification, our instinctual nature, our primal urge to move and express our natures physically. Its energy is extended, extroverted, and desires to find passionate expression.

Pure Oils used in the candles Ginger is utilised to boost confidence and is complemented by lavender latifolia, patchouli and palmarosa for their calming and balancing properties. Grapefruit white energises and uplifts the user to inspire intention and survival skills.

Direction:
South

Colours:
All the variations of earth...

Altar tools:
Stones, crystals, jewels, sea salt, earth itself

WATER (Sacral Chakra)  The Sacral Chakra, located in the abdomen, lower back, and sexual organs, is related to creativity, emotions and sexuality. Linked to the reproductive area of the female body, creativity is heightened when this chakra is awakened.

Water:  The nurturing, cleansing, psychic and emotional element, its energy is receptive, feminine, flowing, tidal, surging, in sync with the moon. Emotions flow as subtle or as deep as the widest ocean.

Pure Oils used in the candles: Ylang ylang is used for its anti-depressant qualities, sweet orange and grapefruit white to relieve anxiety, and patchouli for its calming effect. These work together to lead the user to the centre of their creativity and personal power.

Direction:
West

Colours:
Blue, blue-green, green, gray, indigo, aquamarine, white

Altar tools:
Chalice, cauldron, mirrors, scrying bowls... any receptacle that can 'hold' water.

FIRE (Solar Plexus Chakra)  The Solar Plexus Chakra is known as the power chakra. It rules our personal power, metabolism, and is where intuition is manifested on the physical plane. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, a strong sense of self, spontaneity, and non-dominating power.

Fire: Fire is the sun which grows our food, and fire is the element that transforms metal into jewels, enables plant-life to regenerate, or turns material objects into ash.

Pure Oils used in the candles: Lemongrass and eucalyptus are used to cleanse and decongest the chakra ready for the energies of rosewood, (used for its restorative qualities),peppermint to promote a pleasant sense of stimulation, bergamot to uplift, and lime and lemon myrtle to promote clarity, assertiveness and self-confidence.

Direction:
North

Colours:
All the variations of flame...

Altar tools:
Wand, candles

AIR (Heart Chakra) The Heart Chakra is related to love and is the integrator of opposites in the psyche. A healthy heart chakra produces enhanced empathetic abilities, allows us to love deeply, feel compassion, and experience peace, lightness and balance.

Air: Mental faculties, thinking, ideas, conceptualising, swift, subtle, light, unpredictable. As light as a feather, as strong as a hurricane, as essential as breathing.

Pure Oils used in the candles:
Sweet orange reduces anxiety to clear the way for lemon (clarity), geranium bourbon and chamomile for balancing mood swings, grapefruit white to stimulate energy flows, and jasmine absolute - an aphrodisiac used to promote optimism and balance.
Direction:
East

Colours:
White, pale blues, gray, the colours of clouds

Altar tools:
Athame, incense, oil burning (the vapour represents air) feathers

SOUND (Throat Chakra) Located in the throat, the Throat Chakra is related to communication and creativity.

Sound: The vibration of sound released through language and song promotes clarity and a sense of lightness and well-being. Sound also reaches inside us, stirs emotions, evokes memories, enlivens spirit, soothes the self.

Pure Oils used in the candles: Vetiver is a nourishing promoter of possibilities. It is complemented with cedarwood atlas to decongest the chakra and allow lemon and cajeput to bring clarity and vision, lavender angustifolia to balance new energy, and frankincense to revive intentions.

Direction:
Listen to what your intuition tells you

Altar tools:
musical instruments, CDs, musical scores

LIGHT (Third Eye Chakra)  The Third Eye Chakra is related to the act of seeing, both physically and intuitively. As such it opens our psychic faculties and our understanding of archetypal levels. The awakening of the third-eye chakra leads to clairvoyance or the ability to see on the non-physical planes.

Spirit: is unique and personal to each person working with magic.

Pure Oils used in the candles: Cedarwood atlas unblocks energy flows ready for rosemary-cineole (a brain stimulant promoting clarity), calming lavender angustifolia, lemon and frankincense for rejuvenation, and basil to assist with decision making in the new space of vision and insight.

Direction:
All around and within

Altar tools:
Whatever speaks to your soul and makes your heart sing

THOUGHT (Crown Chakra)  The Crown Chakra relates to consciousness as pure awareness. It is our connection to the greater world beyond, to a timeless, spaceless place of all-knowing. When awakened, this chakra brings us knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual connection, and bliss.

Thought: There are many kinds of 'thought' and 'knowledge' - cognitive, emotional, intellectual, memory, spiritual... A vibrant crown chakra facilitates pure thought to flow; it allows good intentions and bequests to be presented to the Universe in good faith.

Pure Oils used in the candles: A euphoric state of enlighten- ment can be achieved through the combination of peppermint arvensis, clove leaf and cinnamon bark, with sweet orange to keep the user relaxed in this heightened state.

Direction:
Up

Altar tools:
Photographs, journal, books
