In legend, Medusa was a gorgon who guarded the temple of Minerva with her sisters. In other myths, Medusa was a beautiful African queen, an archetypal Amazon warrior. 

Her image in the modern day is skewed to the patriarchal myth of fearful ugliness, a model of behaviour punishable by physical destruction. It is possible that the myths started through men's fear of the feminine divine wisdom represented by the snakes, and the frozen anger on Medusa's face representing incredible inner strength manifesting in outer rage.
